A neighbor has a 6 foot tall verbena that has been chewed by a mystery critter. Some leaves have been skeletonized and the tender, new leaves at the ends of twigs are gone. Just on the top half of the plant out of the reach of deer. Photo attached. We'd like some guidance on how to solve this mystery. We don't see any caterpillars. Thank you.

I live on Hamilton Pool Rd. in Austin and we've been noticing this particularly evil weed lately.  I don't know how long exactly it's been around but I've been living here (again) since May of 2010 and it's been since then.  This weed is thorny and tough to cut and it seems that actually pulling it up is the only way to get rid of it.  All you have to do is brush up against it and you're cut to shreds.  I'm getting kind of scared that this thing is going to take over.  Have you heard about this/know about it and can you tell me how to get rid of it?

A number of Bonsai Club members and I are experiencing clorotic symptoms on our locally collected blueberry plants. The leaves at the end of the branches are chlorotic, no evidence of insects/disease. Plants are in a mix of calcined clay, granite grit or haydite and pine bark fines. They are fed regularly. We are aware that acidic conditions are needed but soils have not been tested. Are you aware of any disease in the area that could be the cause of this problem? any other advice, please? a number of our scotch pine trees are coming up with a yellowish cast to the needles. Last spring we lost 2 of our pyramid arborvitae when they turned rust brown a section at a time and obviously died. I had read somewhere this may be due to a lack of acid in soil. I did buy a bag of sulfur which is indicated for acid loving plants but am questioning if this is what they need. Any ideas?

Hello! I would like to use climbing peas to create a teepee for my kids to play in this summer. I would love to have harvestable peas or flowers too, but mostly I am concerned with getting good height on the growth given the short growing season up here. My questions are: what kind of peas would you recommend? Scarlet Runner Beans? And when can I plant? The ground is already un-frozen, but I am worried about a late freeze. I am new to the area but I have heard lots of stories about snow in May and even June! Thanks so much, Emma

A peony plant that has been a prolific bloomer in past years only has one bud this year. Another bush near by is doing well. Any idea why there is a lack of buds? The foliage looks great.

I have 3 large dogs whose doody I bury in a pit 4'x4'x4'. It takes 4-6 months to fill these pits; then I move on to a new location for the next pit. How long should I wait before digging in that area again?

I have a small plant growing in my garden bed and I don't know what it is. It is very leafy. The leaves are spear tip shaped and about six inches long with fuzz. The plant is self is maybe a foot tall and about 18' diameter. The whole plant has 1/8 inch long white or clear hairs all over. I have several pictures on my phone, but I can't figure out how to upload them to this site. I can email or text them.

a portion of my yard has been overwhelmed by a shallow-rooted very thin bamboo-like grass that grows to 24" in height +/-; while it is a very attractive, it does appear to be an invasive, given how quickly it has spread and its inability to co-exist with grass. is this "Japanese Stiltgrass"? is it an invasive? is there a downside to allowing it grow without restraint? short of pulling it out by hand, is there a way to control it/ eradicate it?

A previous email to you may not have made it, so resending. The enclosed fotos show a very invasive plant in my backyard. The leaves have a waxy (upper?) surface, and it appears not to be effected by a broad-leaf weed killer. I've used my weed-wacker to remove the leaves leaving only stems. Might a weed-killer then be effective via spray onto the stems and surrounding area?

A rabbit in the yard has eaten everything - including the bark from the trees and shrubs! We have an enclosed yard. (Neighbors on both sides and a garage at the end. He lives under a large deck. How can we get him out of the yard? What can we put in the yard to keep him from eating the plants?

A recent article in the Star Tribune discussed the use of christmas trees in gardening. I have a 700 square foot flat area of new soil that I will use for planting flowers and shrubs. Soil test results were: Organic matter = 3.9; pH = 7.5; K+ = 82; Olsen Phosphor = 32; Bray 1 Phosphorous = 9; Potassium = 82. I thought of breaking up a couple of these trees and using it to help contour the surface and while holding soil. Do I risk lowering the pH too much by doing this.

A section of our pachysandra bed has turned yellow and died back. Replanting produced same results. Have trouble getting other things to grow there, also. We don't note any other changes with the area. Could it be in soil? What else can we do? Thanks!!

im a first time gardener growing strawberry plants in a plastic bin. when i checked on my strawberry plants- they are perky and growing well. then i saw a strange plant growing also. It has a very thin cap and thin stem. could it be a small mushroom, and if it is how can i tell what kind it is and whether its poisonous or not.  I transplanted it into another container and would like to see what it grows into. Any advice will be greatly appreciated! thanks!

We are new residents of McElmo Canyon (located in the sw corner of CO). Closest town is Cortez. The air currents are very unique in the canyon and unlike Cortez; which is only 10 miles away.One side of the canyon is home to a thriving vineyard;but the other side sees their grapes freeze more often than not. So I need to know what zone is safe for our specific area.
We want to plant some trees soon and need to know what we should pick from your list.

A tree branch fell on a cherry laurel that I had purchased from a nursery about 5 years ago. It about 8-10' tall and it split the trunk. What can I do to save it? Can it be tied up or staked? Do I need to cut half of it off to save the most upright part of the plant?

A tree in front of my house has lost all its leaves, which is strange for this time of year all the trees in Peru are full of leaves. One strange thing is that the tree has large white fungus at base, that if we take them out, they grow back. Another strange thing is that at the end of last winter (now we are starting the fall) the tree was filled with large pods, which still hanging from its branches (the other trees did not) The first picture is a photo of the tree. The second one is a picture of other healthy tree to help identify the specie and the third picture is a photo of the fungus.
