Looking for an evergreen tree/shrub for a small St. Paul yard. #305188

I am looking for a kind of conical shaped evergreen tree/shrub that is low growing and can be planted in a row to block a view. Can you think of some good trees/shrubs that would fit this purpose and that are low maintenance? All the pine trees I've seen so far are very tall and there are power lines overhead. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks! Kathy

What is causing yellowing & dropping leaves on the Manzanita tree many years old and in same location?  It gets watered occasionally.. It is located along a hillside in very sandy soil. I noticed dark spots on some leaves!  How do I treat this?

I had 3 12 foot crimson maples planted in our yard this spring. I was worried I wasn't giving them enuf water because the leaves had brown, curly edges. Now that I have seen your web site about leaf blister....I think that is what is going on. Will this go away next year with new leaves? Im seeing some new leaf growth now but they don't look very hearty. What can I do? Mary Shackleton

Mature Cedars suddenly turning brown #232039

We just moved onto a property with two ceaders, planted about 10 feet from each other, one with about an 8 inch diameter trunk and the other with a 12 inch diameter trunk at the base. They looked great until a few weeks ago, when the foliage began turning brown. It has gotten rapidly worse. I can't think of anything we have done that would have impacted the trees. The soil doesn't seem waterlogged. It seems odd that they would die shortly after we moved in (4 months ago), and that it is happening so suddenly. I am hoping maybe you can help troubleshoot what the problem might be, and if I can save these trees. There is some kind of bug on the underside of all the leaves, and even the green leaves look sick.

I think this is powdery mildew on my squash plants. But I’m not sure. Because it is not showing up like circular dustings, it’s very specifically showing up along the veins of the leaf. What is it, and what can I do about it? Help!

Our potted miniature lemon tree has droopy, yellowing leaves. Dropping some. This has developed over last couple of weeks. We have been battling a scale infestation for quite awhile (hand squishing and neem spray), but it could also be overwatering (multiple cooks not coordinating). We’ve cut back the watering and upped scale patrols while moving it outside for more sun. Should we repot? How to identify and possibly treat possible root rot?

Love this access to expert info!
                            Just found out my winter rye which has seed heads is allelopathic in the short term.I have to get the vegetable garden planted soon.Should I yank it out roots and all and use it later for mulch or compost it.Is there some way to minimize the negative effect? Maybe put molasses and fish emulsion to get the microbes going.The garden isn't that big so at least on some of it, labor and costly efforts might be possible.Are there some vegetables less affected.Would transplants grow better than seeds.
                                   Also I would like to increase the worm population in the raised beds{all of the grden is raised beds}.I was going to use coco coir or soil pep {a type of fine pine bark}.Would something else be better for worms.Half the Garden is right up on the front side walk, so it would be better if it looked good.Thanks in advance. If you can only answer 1 question the first one about the rye is most pressing.

Morning glory invaded my strawberry beds about 3 years ago. I constantly remove, but this year I've lost the war. Any suggestions? I think I may need to remove strawberries (bare root) and poison the soil. Can I do this now? How long can the plants survive in a fridge?

We planted a nursery-grown 9-ft mountain ash last fall on our Lake Superior property. It seemed very healthy this spring and early summer and bloomed beautifully. A couple of days ago we noticed that most leaves had suddenly become brown, especially around the edges. We also found insect activity. Another smaller mountain ash about 15 feet away, transplanted last fall from another spot on our property, seems fine (although it did not bloom). We have been watering both regularly. These trees are planted in an area behind a sea wall we had replaced last summer. The planting area was disturbed, and a foot of gravel now helps drainage behind the wall, but we added much soil before replanting this area. Previously, several mountain ash had thrived in this spot. Let us know if you have any idea what may be wrong with this tree and if there is anything we can do to help it.

My day lilies look terrible this year. We did have an unusually cold winter and they probably do need thinning out. The leaves are yellowy, not a healthy green. A friend told me they probably need iron. What do you suggest?

I am considering using  Nassella / Stipa tenuissima
in a flowerbed in my front yard.  I currently use palisade zoysia grass for my lawn.  I have been reading that mexican feather grass is considered invasive, but I have been seeing it used in beds around San Antonio.  Should I be concerned that it will take root in the zoysia grass?  Next question, will it hurt to let the zoysia go brown in the summer, my water bill is killing me to keep it green?  Third, is there a native grass alternative to zoysia or st augustine that i should consider for my lawn or in a future lawn?
