A gardener has called to say that the roots of his potato plant had been eaten and he found grubs in the area. He claims they have also eaten areas on the tubers. Grubs are more commonly a turf problem, not veg garden. Any ideas?

Potatoes can be attacked by grub-like insects. Here are a couple of links that describe the damage, and some remedies for this kind of problem:
