Willamette Valley Ponderosa Pine Questions #328941

Asked June 05, 2016, 12:49 PM EDT

Hello, I am considering planting a few Ponderosa Pines on my property and I would like to plant the species that is native to the Willamette Valley. My first questions is, is there a certain nursery that I should contact to purchase the seedlings from? I live in Brownsville. Secondly, I am new to tree planting and was wondering if you could provide me with any information or a source for information that could guide me through the process. Anything from best season to plant, spacing for trees, maintenance in their early years. Any help you could provide is greatly appreciated. Regards, Nathan

Nurseryguide.com has a great search engine for finding native plants in Oregon. Here is a search I did for Willamette Valley Ponderosa Pine. http://nurseryguide.com/find_plants/pinus_ponderosa_willamette_valley_seed_source.  If that proves unsuccessful you might also try The Forest Seedlings Network: http://www.forestseedlingnetwork.com/.  When you order the seedlings make sure that you tell them were you are and that you want "Willamette Valley Ponderosa Pine" to get seedlings with the proper seed zone, or the nursery will assume it is east-side pine.

OSU Extension has some great publications on planting and seedling care. I would have you start here and e-mail again with more specific questions.   Here is the link. https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/topic/forestry-and-wood-processing/reforestation
You can read the publications online by clicking on the title, then view now.

The Extension service does planting classes frequently. Keep an eye out on your local extension forestry website for announcements.

Hope it works out for you!

Lauren,

Thank you very much for this information. I will do some more reading and research and contact a few of these nurseries. I appreciate the help and if I have more specific questions down the road I will send another email.

Thanks again,
