I have what looks like a robust fig tree for the past 10 years but not one fig. Ever. What is my poor fig tree missing?
Montgomery County Maryland
Do you know what type of fig plant it is? If you have a type that is not winter hardy in this area and the top growth is killed down during very cold winter weather, it can take 2 or 3 growing seasons to get back into shape for production of fruits. In addition, plants that are fertilized regularly may remain in a juvenile stage and fail to produce figs. Take a look at the following links for more information about figs, cold hardy varieties recommended for Maryland, and growing tips.
